“Northern Flinders Ranges Country in South Australia belongs to the Adnyamathanha people. Adnya is ‘rock’ mathanha is ‘people’, so the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Rangers are the people of the rocks. Adnyamathanha spirit returns to be a part of the rock or the earth. All of the rocks and ranges have the spirit of Adnyamathanha in them. The spirits of people are embedded in this Country”. Terrence Coulthard, Adnyamathanha Elder and senior linguist.
This month, SharingStories Foundation is collaborating with senior cultural custodians who will be sharing knowledge, and offering insight into the depth of Adnyamathanha relationship with Country and culture.
Meet Terrence Coulthard. He is working on the final stages of a beautiful, in-depth grammar-dictionary for the Adnyamathanha language. During April, Terrence will also be working with Sharing Stories Foundation and local young people to populate the ‘Language Lightbox‘ application, which will be used as an interactive learning tool in schools and cultural hubs across Australia. Over the month, we will learn more about Terrence through his work as Vice Chairperson for Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association (ATLA) and his cultural experience tours at Iga Warta.
In the clip below, Terrence speaks about Adnyamathanha connection with Country.
“We have to have these mountains, we have to have these hills, we have to have the Country. We use it as a tool for teaching people about respect for Mother Earth…”
